Sometimes people become concerned about what kind of posture should be used in prayer.
After all, Moses held his arms in prayer. Others folded their hands. Some prostrated themselves, At times Jesus knelt.
The following poem by Sam Walter Foss humorously expresses this:
“The proper way for a person to pray,”
Said Deacon Lemuel Keyes,
“And the only proper attitude
Is down upon the knees.”
“Nay, I should say the way to pray”,
Said the Reverend Doctor Wise,
“Is standing straight with outstretched arms
And rapt and upturned eyes.”
“Oh, no, no, no” said Elder Snow,
“Such posture is too proud,
A person should pray with eyes fast closed
And head contritely bowed.”
“It seems to me the hands should be
Austerely clasped in front.
With both thumbs pointing toward the ground.”
Said Reverend Doctor Blunt
“Last year I fell into Hodgkin’s well
Head first,” said Cyrus Brown
“With both my heels a-stickin’ up, 19
My head a-pointing down;
An’ I made a prayer right then an’ there-
Best prayer I ever said,
The prayingest prayer I ever prayed,
A-standing on my head.”
